Our take on insurance.

BookR doesn't sell insurance, and we don't promise coverage we can't stand behind. Here's exactly how damage, loss, and theft work on BookR, in plain words.

Why no “covered up to $10,000”

You've probably seen rental sites advertise big coverage numbers. Read their terms and the money is often paid only if the platform decides to pay it, after deductibles and exclusions, and some say they can drop the program at any time. A number like that tells you the most you could ever get, not what you'll actually get.

We'd rather tell you the truth up front. BookR doesn't insure items, owners, or renters, and doesn't offer a protection plan or a guarantee. What we do is make the rules clear before anyone books, keep a record of every handoff, and help you settle things fairly.

How problems get handled

The whole process, start to finish.

  1. 1

A limit you see before you book

Owners can set a post-rental charge limit, up to $500 and never more than the item's used value. It's shown before anyone books. Without one, nothing can be charged after the rental.

  2. 2

    Photos at pickup and return

Both of you photograph the item in the app at pickup and return. Those photos are the record if anything goes wrong.

  3. 3

    Settle it between you first

If there's damage, the owner (or the renter) opens a claim. You get 5 business days to agree in messages: accept, counter once, or send it to BookR.

  4. 4

BookR reviews if you can't agree

BookR looks at the photos and messages from both sides and sends an itemized decision with its reasons.

  5. 5

    A dispute means no charge

If the renter disputes BookR's decision, BookR doesn't charge them. Both of you get the full claim record.

No insurance company in the middle

You never have to buy an add-on policy, read an insurer's fine print, or file with a claims department to rent or list on BookR. Problems stay between the two people involved, with BookR helping, and every step happens in the app.

A community built on trust

Most rentals go fine because people treat each other's things with care. BookR is built to help that happen.

Optional ID verification

Renters and owners can verify a government ID. Verified people get a badge others can see.

Reviews from real rentals

Only a renter who completed a rental can review the owner, so every review comes from a real booking.

Talk before you book

Message each other first. Ask about condition, use, and pickup before anyone commits.

Limits set up front

No deposits and no holds on your card. The most that can ever be charged is shown before you book.

If something is stolen

  • Report it to the police within 48 hours and keep the report number.
  • Tell the other person and BookR in the booking's messages.
  • Cooperate with the owner, BookR, and the police.
  • If the renter reports it and cooperates, and neither they nor someone they let use it took it, the most the renter owes is the listing's limit.

If it goes to small claims court

  • Small claims court is a simple, low-cost court for smaller amounts. You usually don't need a lawyer.
  • BookR gives both of you a printable claim record: pickup and return photos with timestamps, your messages, any offers, and BookR's review.
  • Save it as a PDF from the claim page and bring it with you.
  • BookR isn't a party to your rental, so it doesn't sue or appear for either side.

Coverage you might already have

You don't need any of this to use BookR. But if you already have coverage, it's worth knowing what it does and doesn't include. Policies vary a lot, so check yours.

Your credit card

Some cards have benefits like purchase protection, but many specifically exclude rented or leased items, and rental-car coverage usually covers only cars. Check your card's guide to benefits before counting on it.

Renting? Your home or renters policy

Some policies pay a small amount, often $500 to $1,000, for accidental damage you cause to someone else's things. Ask your insurer whether that applies to borrowed or rented items.

Listing? Your home or renters policy

Many policies don't cover your things while they're rented out to someone else. If you list valuable gear, ask your insurer about it, or about a policy that covers specific items.

BookR's own insurance

BookR doesn't carry business insurance yet. When it does, that policy will protect BookR as a company. It won't cover your items or you, and we won't describe it as if it does.

The fine print, in full

This page is a plain summary. The rules themselves are in our Rental Agreement (section 6), Terms of Service, and Insurance Disclosure.
